Mission & Goals
To develop service and program support to ensure that the scientific enterprise capitalizes on the rich talent of the underrepresented minority community.
In light of our mission, AMP continually strives to achieve the following goals:
- To increase the minority STEM degree production to 1,116 degrees annually across the region
- To move at least 10% of Philadelphia AMP graduates into graduate STEM education
Achievements
Philadelphia AMP is pleased to report the achievements of the students it serves:
- Degree Production
- Annual minority STEM degree production increased from 281 degrees in 1993 to 526 degrees in 2000. Philadelphia AMP has maintained this productivity since the reporting of this data.
- Between 1999 and 2000 minority STEM degree production increased by 11%. During this same period, STEM degree production for the general population decreased by approximately 1% from 2885 to 2869 STEM degrees.
- Retention
- Based on a fall 1994 freshman cohort study, AMP minority STEM students are retained at a higher level (80%) then their non-AMP minority counterparts (48%) over a four-year period.
Additional analysis has shown that over a five-year period the retention/graduation rate of AMP minority STEM students (74%) continues to exceed their non-AMP counterparts (40%), and is similar to that of non-minority students (75%).
